Though it's not immediately apparent, the BMW 1 Series has been refreshed for the 2012 model year. Starting with the obvious, the 128i Coupe and Convertible’s front fascia have lost the more conservative look of their predecessor. As the red Convertible pictured shows, the lower fascia is resculpted and the foglight housings have been redone. Tucked toward the outer edge of the foglight housings and barely visible in the photo are air ducts that are part of BMW’s Air Curtain feature, which was first introduced on the 1 Series M Coupe. Air Curtain is standard on all 2012 128i models and directs high-pressure air from the front end to the sides of the front wheels to help combat the natural turbulence generated by the wheels’ rapid rotation, all in the name of improved aerodynamic performance. Special Aero wheels will be up for order as well.

The 135i Coupe and Convertible appears to be mostly untouched on the exterior. The top-of-the-line 1 Series already comes with the M Aerodynamic Kit standard and doesn’t add Air Curtain. Additionally, fresh design accents have been implemented into the 128i and 135i headlights and taillights.

Inside, a Gloss White interior trim is the latest option for the 2012 model year and certain switches and controls have been refined for a better look and feel.

The 128i remains powered by the 3.0-liter inline-six with 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque; the 135i puts the turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque to good use. A six-speed manual transmission is the norm, but a six-speed automatic (128i) and seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission (135i) are available too.

The 2012 1 Series Coupe and Convertible will go on sale Spring 2011.

BMW to enter the hatchback market in India with the 1-series

Downsizing is the buzzword for premium carmakers, especially for developing countries like India. After creating ripples in the premium car market with its sub-25 lakh X1 SUV, BMW seems to be planning to take the game further down the segment hierarchy. The company recently unveiled the 2012 version of its 1-series hatchback (also known as the F20 internally), and will put it on sale in the international market by September. The same car will be launched in the Indian market as well, sometime in 2012.

The cheapest car in BMW’s international lineup is expected to carry a sub 20 lakh price tag, and is expected to take the sales volumes to a new high. The 1 series may not be the prettiest cars around, but who cares, really – all that matter is that round blue and white logo on the grille, a rear wheel drive, and some of the most intoxicating engines under the bonnet. It’s bigger than your usual hatchback for sure though, and the cabin space and comfort would be more than your 5 lakh hatchback any given day.

BMW’s distinguishing points to justify the extra money spent would be powerful engines, driver oriented chassis, immaculate handling, liberal equipment levels and well, a rear wheel drive layout. Sadly, BMW seem to be working on FWD cars, I would rather be dead than having to witness one.

Under the hood there will be choice of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.6-liter petrol engine in available in two states of tune producing 136 PS and 170 PS. Then there would be a 2.0-liter diesel engine with power outputs ranging from 143 PS to 184 PS.

Transmission options are also impressive for this class of car and include the 8-speed automatic from ZF. There will also be a six speed manual for those want to shift ratios the good old way.

So if you were looking to buy a car for Rs. 15 lakh, start saving up a bit more. You’ll get your shot at driving a BMW without having to loot a bank very soon!

The 1 series won’t be the only ‘cheap premium’ car looking for those greenbacks in your wallet though. Mercedes-Benz too will be launching it’s A and B Class hatchbacks to offer a proper fight to the Bavarian carmaker. You can check out our earlier stories on the A and B class by searching Motoroids.

But does it make sense to you? A 15+ lakh rupee premium hatchback, would you ever buy one? I for one would love to have one parked in my garage with a diesel engine. Do let us know your views.

BMW introduces new 520d EfficientDynamics

BMW have revealed the first official pictures of the 2011 520d EfficientDynamics. The new car, true to the EfficientDynamics tag will boast extraordinarily low CO2 emissions (119gm/km) and great fuel efficiency.

The 520d ED will achieve the feat of being clean, green and mean at the same time by employing some clever tech. BMW have made the final drive ratio quite tall to enable the new 520d ED to cruise at the maximum possible efficiency on the open freeways. The new alloys comprise of a design which reduces drag significantly. The tyres on the new car have much less rolling resistance than normal. In addition to all this the car comes with a start stop system which saves fuel when the car is idling. The 520d ED also has a optimum gearshift indicator to help the driver stay in the best gear for best efficiency.

The car will be introduced in the European market by September. An Indian launch should follow in a couple of months.

Some of you may remember the G-Power BMW M5 Hurricane RR which claimed the title as the world’s fastest sedan. Now the German tuner G-Power has set-out to claim another ‘world’s fastest’ title with the outgoing BMW M6 and its beefy V10 engine.

G-Power is known for developing exclusive twin-supercharger kits for the BMW M5 and BMW M6’s V10. They have taken their normal run-of-the-mill kit and tuned it even more to produce upwards of 789 horsepower and 590 foot-pounds of torque. With this configuration it is enough to propel the M6 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds. From a standstill the M6 Hurricane RR can reach 186mph in just 24.9 seconds. Top speed is 231mph!

If you have the resources, about $345K, you can not only own one of the fastest BMW M6’s around, but you would be among the fastest 4-seater coupes in the world.

Already have a BMW M5 or M6? Be sure to contact our sponsor, PSI – Precision Sport Industries (Authorized dealer and installer of G-Power products), in regards to installation of a G-Power Kit for your own BMW M5 or M6.

BMW desires to convert your car key into a widespread accession device applying near-field communications (NFC) technology.
In a paper issued on its web site, BMW spelt out programs to permit people to tailor-make their electronic car keys to permit the driver to disburse for goods, to book and disburse for journey on trains, to adjust radios, and even to reserve and open hotel rooms.
Thomas Kratz of BMW development access and authentication systems division remarked “Our vision is that, in future, the key will not only mean access to the car but, inside and outside the car, will become as it were the ‘key’ to many functions. I would then be able to set out while checking for just one thing: have I got my BMW key on me?”
NFC is a RFID-based (radio frequency identification) wireless messages technology that does work at series of under 10cm. It requires temporarily accommodating two NFC-enabled devices close as one to set in motion the related reaction. The highest data transfer rate is at present 424kbps.
Future application programs include substitution of the house key or other contact systems such as card readers. It could memory access authority to the workplace and thus get relief from the company ID card, BMW said.
