Mercedes-Benz’s X1 basher, BLK-Class Rendered

The moment any auto company introduces a new and successful product the rivals come up with their own version of the same product. Auto Biggies like the Audi, BMW & Mercedes Benz are constantly in a race to introduce similar platform vehicles to give the buyer a broader spectrum of choice. BMW made the first mark in the mini-SUV segment by introducing the X1. Many disapproved the car, but more people loved it. And the car is doing exceptionally well in the Indian, as well as the International market. In no time the Audi camp was ready with their double downsized Q7 which was their version of the mini-SUV – the Q3. The Audi Q3 which will make its Indian debut late 2011 or early 2012.

Now finally Mercedes Benz is planning their own mini-SUV which will be named BLK-Class. We have some image rendering done and the car looks like it has drawn some serious inspiration from the recently introduced A-Class Concept right from the headlight, the front grille, coupe like roof line, the creases on the flanks and the hatchback rear end. The mini-SUV BLK Class is based on the Mercedes Front-wheel drive architecture (MFA) which will also be seen on the A & B Class.

Engine options for this one are many, the ones speculated are the 1.8 lit petrol which makes 168bhp to 200bhp. Then there is the 1.6lit Renault diesel engine which comes from the Daimler-Renault partnership making 120bhp. Finally the Mercedes might put in the 2.1 liter diesel which makes power ranging from 170bhp to 204bhp. Whichever engine Mercedes decides to plonk will be mated to the six speed manual and the six speed dual clutch auto box.

Expect this car by late 2012 or early 2013. A package good enough for you in the first look?

Mercedes to bring A and B-Class cars to India

Mercedes-Benz India may cry out loud that it’s into the numbers game, but the company is surely feeling the heat. German compatriots BMW and Audi have become a major headache for the company which was mostly unrivalled in India only a few years ago. M-B thus is strengthening its lineup in India to cover every segment and add some more numbers.

The company has officially said that it’s planning to bring its A and B Class cars into India in the next 3 to 4 years. M-B India plans to assemble the cars locally to keep the costs low and volumes high. “We will bring in A and B Class cars into India in the next 3-4 years” said Peter Honegg – Mercedes India MD and CEO.

As a result of the recently introduced new CKD norms, the company has also started assembling the engines and transmissions of the hot selling C and E-class cars in India to save the extra duty and keep the costs low.

Mr. Honegg was very specific on the need to increasing localisation to stay competitive in a market increasingly dominated by BMW. “We do not have enough locally assembled products in India. My current portfolio does not allow me to compete with my competitors at this time. If I do not produce these (A and B Class) cars locally, I can’t get the numbers. We will be able to compete (with BMW) only when we produce (the cars) locally…the decision to produce them locally will be taken by Germany” Mr Honegg said.

Mercedes B-Class F-Cell, 2010

Mercedes B-Class F-Cell, 2010

Mercedes-Benz is launching its first series-produced fuel cell car on the road: the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell. The environmentally friendly electric car has better a performance similar to than a 2,0-litre petrol car and is fully suited for everyday driving. The zero-emission drive system consumes the equivalent of 3.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle). Production of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell will commence in late 2009 with a small lot. The first of around 200 vehicles will be delivered to customers in Europe and the USA at the beginning of 2010.

The new fuel cell vehicle offers everything that people expect from a Mercedes-Benz: High comfort and safety as well as no reduction in interior space and boot capacity. Customers will not have to sacrifice any driving pleasure either, because the electric motor has a peak performance of 100 kW/136 hp and a maximum torque of 290 Nm, which is available from the first rotation. It ensures that the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell, whose impressive dynamic handling properties are in some cases far better than those of a two-litre petrol car, gets off to an excellent start. Despite these qualities, the zero-emission fuel cell drive consumes the equivalent of only 3.3 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC). Thanks to its great range of about 400 kilometres and short refuelling times of around three minutes, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell ensures local zero-emission mobility even for long stretches.

The vehicle's technological heart is the new generation of the compact, high-performance fuel cell system, in which gaseous hydrogen reacts with atmospheric oxygen at 700 bar to generate a current for the electric motor. The fuel cell system of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell has a very good cold-start capability even at temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius. The drive system was completely newly developed versus the F-Cell A-Class presented in 2004, with Mercedes-Benz engineers achieving considerable improvements in output, torque, operating range, reliability, starting characteristics and comfort. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell now offers driving pleasure and day-to-day suitability at Mercedes level - without local emissions.

As in hybrids with combustion engines, the fuel-cell car uses a lithium-ion battery with an output of 35 kW and a capacity of 1.4 kWh to boost power and recover braking energy. Lithium-ion technology offers several advantages over conventional batteries, including compact dimensions, high performance, great recharge efficiency and a long service life.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell employs the unique sandwich floor architecture that is well-known from the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class. The advantage of this design is that the drive components are located in the sandwich floor, where they are protected and don't take up much space so that the vehicle's interior remains fully usable and a boot capacity of 416 litres is available.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell does not need to fear comparison where equipment is concerned either. Eye-catching features include a bonamite silver paint finish and exclusive light-alloy wheels in a 10-spoke design. In the interior, leather upholstery, seat heating, automatic climate control and the COMAND-system, as well as other features, continue to ensure a high level of comfort.

Same level of safety as in other Mercedes cars
No matter what the conditions, the operational reliability of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell is of the same high level as in Mercedes vehicles with conventional combustion engines. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell's integrated safety concept takes the specific characteristics of the innovative drive system into account. The concept incorporates the expertise from the many years of experience Mercedes-Benz has had with fuel cell drives and high-voltage applications. Mercedes engineers have tested and optimised the drive-specific components' safety in more than 30 additional crash tests.

Network of filling stations required for car's widespread use
With more than 100 test vehicles and a combined total of over 4.5 million kilometres of trial testing, Daimler and Mercedes-Benz have the most extensive experience with fuel cell vehicles of any manufacturer worldwide. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell is further testimony of this technology's high level of development for automotive use. However, a comprehensive network of hydrogen filling stations still has to be set up before locally zero-emission driving can become a widespread reality. To make this possible, Daimler is cooperating with government authorities, energy utilities and oil companies in joint projects in places such as Hamburg, Stuttgart and California.

Mercedes-Benz views the development of electric cars with battery and fuel cell drives for local zero-emission driving as a means of supplementing vehicles with high-tech internal combustion engines. Advanced diesel and petrol engines will remain important for automotive applications for a long time to come - not only for individual mobility in passenger cars - especially over long distances - but, more importantly, for freight transport in trucks. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, will increasingly be used in urban transport.

Mercedes-Benz to launch the G-Wagon on 14th February

Mercedes-Benz is launching it iconic off roading vehicle, the G-Wagon in India on 14th of February. It’s kind of amusing to see the company launching the vehicle on Valentine’s Day, as the G-Wagon was born as a military vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its invention of the automobile. The G-Class is the longest-serving passenger car series in the 125-year history of the brand. The G-Class is being introduced to mark the celebrations in India.

The G-Wagon is considered one of the most accomplished off-roaders in the world. It has remained largely unchanged for 30 years, and still stays true to the original design and body on ladder frame layout. it is one of the most timeless automobiles indeed!

The 2011 G-Class is offered with either a 224bhp V6 diesel (G 350 CDI) or two gasoline V8 engines producing 388HP in the G500 and 507HP in the G55 AMG model. The G-Class is scheduled to remain in production until 2015.

Expect us to bring you the details live from the launch.

Mercedes-Benz planning small car for India

When it comes to India, small is big. Every carmaker has been trying to get a share of the small car market pie. The turnaround Ford has managed in India with the Figo in just a year goes to explain the importance of the B-segment in the Indian context. And while it’s obvious for the mainstream car manufacturers to hustle for this space, even premium carmakers are eyeing the opportunity.

If some reports are to be believed, Mercedes-Benz is exploring the possibilities to launch a small car for the Indian market. While no specifics have been divulged about this new project, a small car with the three pointed star, and a substantially less price than even the C-class makes business sense. The company has the A and B class cars in its international line-up as options, but the interesting bit here is that M-B is mulling a ground up small car platform for this market. Although the costs involved in developing a car ground-up is enormous, and there has to be sustained volumes for such a project to be feasible, the company is still showing intent to consider the option.

The company is looking at modifying its Smart platform to suit the Indian conditions. Smart is a premium small car brand by M-B which offers two and four seater small cars with the name ForTwo and ForFour primarily in the American and European market. The car will be tweaked to suit the price and practicality sensibilities of the Indian audiences. Mercedes-Benz may utilize its alliance with Renault-Nissan to develop a cost-effective model for India. If all goes well, we may soon see Mercedes compacts zipping around on our streets.
